Mixing And Mastering
Audio Engineering Solutions Built On First Principles
What Is Mixing?
Mixing is balancing, so for us at Unlock Your Sound, balance is at the very forefront of every decision we make.
Much like when cooking your favourite dish, the quality of the end product is predicated on how well you balance ingredients.
In audio mixing, balancing includes relative levels of instruments, dynamics, placement in the 3D sound stage, and overall frequency content.

When you buy mixing and mastering from me, the mixing will be handled by a member of my team before being passed through me for mastering. This allows me to master the mix objectively and with a fresh perspective.
This streamlined process means less back-and-forth for you as I can ascertain the needs of the mix as I master it.
What is Mastering?
To fully understand what mastering is, one should understand what a master is.
A master is a copy or recording from which all copies are made.
In this day and age, the master is what goes out to today’s music platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.
In most cases, only one master actually goes out, and what you hear on those platforms are copies of that one master.
Mastering is a service
The goal of mastering is to achieve the best possible production master with a view of translating on today’s (and tomorrow’s) channels.
The mastering engineer’s job is to work with you to get to the goal.
Mastering is a service, not a transaction.
What’s included in this service?
Initial consultation and mix review
Any necessary audio processing such as EQ, Dynamics, and Limiting
Authoring to final production medium (master)
Embedding of ISRC on request
DDP on request
Gaps, Fades, and Sequencing (Albums and EPs)
Mastering is Photoshop for audio (in the hands of a skilled user). When you’ve finished, what you find is that even though all the individual changes were quite small and subtle, overall they make a massive difference.
